Ashwagandha Herb for Stress

Used to treat nervous disorders and anxiety by calming the mind, ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) acts as an adaptogen that stimulates non-specific resistance to the effects of stress.1,48 Ashwagandha also exerts some sedative effects.1 Often referred to as Indian ginseng, there have been numerous animal studies supporting ashwagandha’s anti-stress activity.48 Modern medical research continues to be conducted on ashwagandha. One particular study found that ashwagandha exhibits anti-anxiety and mood stabilizing effects comparable to that of conventional medications (benzodiazepines and tricyclic anti-depressants) used for these disorders.22
