The following herbal remedies and practices are commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to help prevent or treat hair loss: ¹

• Bhringaraj (Eclipta erecta Linn.) is a pitta pacifying herb said to be the main herb for hair problems in Ayurveda. In Hindi it is called Bhangr—ruler (of) the hair. Bhringaraj leaf juice is boiled in coconut oil to make a hair oil believed to help reverse gray hair and balding.
• Brahmi (gotu kola) is a popular herbal remedy that helps purify the blood and improves circulation. It is often used in Ayurveda to treat hair loss in a variety of forms (e.g., oil and oral supplementation).
• Tulsi (also known as holy basil) is a copper rich herb that can help pacify vata. It is sometimes used in Ayurveda for hair loss or to prevent premature graying. The copper content of tulsi also helps increase iron absorption, another necessary mineral for strong hair.
• Myrrh (Bola, in Sanskrit) helps boost circulation and is often used as a hair loss prevention herb.
• Brimhana is a type of nasya, or nasal purging technique. It is said to help with ailments due to excess doshas, including hair loss and premature greying when used with medicated ghee and herbal extracts. One suggested nasya for hair loss uses Aloe vera juice, warm milk, and ashwagandha or gotu kola herb juice or oil to pacify pitta doshas.
• Pratimarsha is another nasal therapy technique in which medicated or herbal oil (or ghee for pitta doshas) is dropped into the nose and expelled through the mouth. Brahmi (gotu kola) oil is sometimes employed to treat hair loss (even for pitta doshas) and premature greying.
